Facts checked United States status as of 4 September 2026

Volvo Cars is a Swedish carmaker based in Gothenburg. It has been Chinese-owned since 2 August 2010, when Zhejiang Geely Holding Group completed its purchase from Ford. Ford had bought the business from AB Volvo on 31 March 1999 for about US$6.45 billion and sold it eleven years later for US$1.8 billion, of which US$200 million was a note. AB Volvo, the Swedish truck and construction equipment group, is a separate company and has had no ownership link to the car business since 1999.

Volvo Car AB listed on Nasdaq Stockholm in 2021 under the ticker VOLCAR, but Geely retained a large majority. At the end of 2025 Geely Sweden Holdings AB, held through Shanghai Geely Zhaoyuan International Investment and ultimately by Zhejiang Geely Holding Group in Hangzhou, owned 78.65% of the shares and capital.

Volvo Cars sold 710,042 cars in 2025, down 7%, on revenue of SEK 357.3 billion. Operating income fell to SEK 0.3 billion after an impairment of SEK 11.4 billion and restructuring costs. The company employed an average of 42,600 full-time staff during the year. It builds cars in Sweden, Belgium, China and the United States, and its Ridgeville plant in South Carolina also assembles the Polestar 3.

78.65% held by Geely Sweden Holdings AB at the end of 2025; the rest trades on Nasdaq Stockholm.
