Volvo Cars XC40 / EX40: range, price, specs and where it is sold

Facts checked

The XC40 is Volvo's compact SUV and the first car on CMA, the compact architecture Volvo developed jointly with Geely and which also underpins the Polestar 2 and the Lynk & Co 01. It has been in production since November 2017. In 2024 Volvo renamed the battery-electric XC40 Recharge as the EX40 and the coupe-roofed C40 Recharge as the EC40, aligning the electric cars with the EX30 and EX90 names; petrol and mild-hybrid XC40s kept the old name.

Production is split between Europe and China. Volvo's Ghent plant in Belgium builds the XC40, and the Taizhou plant in Zhejiang - opened in 2016, known as Luqiao until Geely transferred it to Volvo Cars in December 2021 - is described in Polestar's 2025 annual report as focused on the CMA platform and building Volvo's XC40, EX40, EC40 and XC70 alongside the Polestar 2. Wikipedia additionally records assembly at Shah Alam in Malaysia and Hoskote near Bangalore in India.

Euro NCAP awarded the XC40 five stars in 2018 with 97 per cent for adult occupant protection. ANCAP's current rating covers Australian cars built from January 2025.
