Chery Holding Group: the group, its brands and who controls it
Facts checked
- HKEX 9973
Listing: Chery Automobile Co., Ltd. listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange on 25 September 2025, stock code 9973, at HK$30.75 a share. Chery Holding Group Co., Ltd. is not itself listed.
Chery is a carmaker from Wuhu, a Yangtze river port in the eastern province of Anhui. The city government started the car project in 1996, the company was incorporated in January 1997, and its first sedan, the Fengyun, went on sale in December 1999. Today the group sells under the Chery, Exeed, Jetour, Omoda, Jaecoo, iCar, Luxeed and Soueast car brands and the Karry commercial-vehicle brand.
The ownership has changed shape repeatedly. Chery began as a municipal state company. In December 2019 a mixed-ownership reform brought in the Qingdao Wudaokou New Energy Automobile Industry Fund, which took 30.99% of Chery Holding Group and 18.52% of Chery Automobile for about RMB 14.45bn, a position later reported as rising to 51% and 35.58%. In 2022 Luxshare bought much of that position. In January 2025 Chery Holding Group distributed its 42.32% holding in the carmaker to its own shareholders, so Wuhu Investment Holding, the employee partnerships and the Luxshare vehicle became direct shareholders of Chery Automobile Co., Ltd. That company listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange on 25 September 2025 under stock code 9973, selling 297 million H shares at HK$30.75 and raising about HK$9.145bn. Chery told the exchange that no single party is able to control it.
The reason the name is known outside China is export volume. Chery Group sold 2,806,393 vehicles worldwide in calendar 2025 and shipped 1,344,020 of them abroad, its twenty-third consecutive year as China's largest exporter of passenger vehicles. Chery says it does business in more than 130 countries and regions. Exports are handled largely through separate marques: Omoda and Jaecoo were created for overseas buyers, Jetour sells across the Middle East, Central Asia, Southeast Asia, Latin America and Africa, and the Chery badge itself is used in markets including Brazil, Argentina, Australia, Mexico (as Chirey), Indonesia, Turkey, Russia, Egypt and South Africa.
Two partnerships are often confused. Chery Jaguar Land Rover is a true 50/50 joint venture with a shared factory at Changshu. Luxeed is not: it is a Chery-owned company that works with Huawei inside Huawei's Harmony Intelligent Mobility Alliance, where Huawei supplies software, electronics, design input and showroom space but takes no equity in the carmaker or the brand.
