Yangwang Yangwang U8: range, price, specs and where it is sold
Facts checked
The U8 is a full-size luxury off-road SUV and the first car sold by Yangwang, the brand BYD introduced in January 2023 to sit above Denza. It went on sale in China on 20 September 2023 at CNY 1,098,000, which made it the most expensive car BYD had put into series production.
It is a series plug-in hybrid rather than a pure electric car: a 2.0-litre turbocharged engine acts as a range extender for four electric motors, one per wheel, with a 49.05 kWh lithium-iron-phosphate battery. The layout is BYD's e⁴ platform, known in Chinese as 易四方 (Yìsìfāng), which the company describes as China's first mass-produced quad-motor independent drive system. Because each wheel is driven separately, the car can rotate on the spot, a manoeuvre usually called a tank turn, and the Premium Edition is rated for short periods of flotation in water. Combined output is quoted at 880 kW, with 180 km of CLTC electric range and 1,000 km combined.
A longer three-row version, the U8L, was shown in April 2025 and launched on 12 September 2025 at CNY 1,280,000, 81 mm longer with a 200 mm longer wheelbase. Yangwang sells only in China; no export channel for the brand was found.
