Weichai Power: the group, its brands and who controls it

Facts checked

Weichai Power is an engine and powertrain maker rather than a vehicle brand, and it is the reason several Chinese truck names are connected to each other. Incorporated in 2002 out of the 1946 Weifang Diesel Engine Factory, it listed in Hong Kong in 2004 and Shenzhen in 2007.

Its controlling shareholder is Shandong Heavy Industry Group, which holds shares through Weichai Holding Group and is itself owned by the Shandong provincial state. The same parent controls Sinotruk's parent CNHTC and Zhongtong Bus, which is why Weichai, Sinotruk and Zhongtong are often described as one camp; they are sister companies rather than parent and subsidiary.

Weichai's own holdings include 51% of Shaanxi Heavy Duty Automobile, the maker of Shacman trucks, taken through the 2005 acquisition of the Torch Automobile group, plus the transmission maker Fast, the axle maker Hande, France's Baudouin, Italy's Ferretti yachts and a large stake in the German forklift group KION with its Dematic logistics arm. Group revenue was RMB231.8 billion in 2025.
