Shacman (Shaanxi Automobile Group): the group, its brands and who controls it

Facts checked

Shaanxi Automobile Holding Group was set up in Xi'an in 1968 to build military off-road trucks and grew into one of China's main heavy-truck makers. Its products carry the Shacman name abroad and 陕汽 at home, covering tractor units, tippers, mixers, port tractors and bus chassis, alongside axles from Hande and light electric commercial vehicles from Shaanxi Tongjia.

Ownership runs on two levels and is often reported wrongly. The holding group is a Shaanxi provincial state enterprise. The company that actually builds the trucks, Shaanxi Heavy Duty Automobile Co., Ltd., is 51% held by Weichai Power, which acquired the stake through its 2005 takeover of the components group Torch Automobile; the balance stays with the Shaanxi group. The two sides disputed control of the truck maker publicly in 2009.

Shacman sells widely outside China. Assembly and distribution arrangements have been announced in Algeria, Pakistan, Mexico and Kyrgyzstan, and the company describes a network of corporate offices and service stations across roughly 140 countries. Its truck families are numbered rather than named: X6000, X5000, X3000, F3000, L3000 and the electric and alternative-fuel variants that carry an e suffix.
