Who owns Xpeng? The ownership chain, Xpeng's stake and the 2014 deal
Facts checked
Xpeng is Chinese. XPeng Inc. was founded in 2014 by He Xiaopeng, is based in Guangzhou and is listed in New York and Hong Kong. Volkswagen holds a small minority -- 4.99% -- and the two companies co-develop platforms and electrical architecture, but Xpeng remains Chinese-controlled.
Xpeng is the sole marque of XPeng Inc.; the brand and the company are the same business, named after co-founder He Xiaopeng.
The chain, step by step
Volkswagen Group holds a stake in Xpeng at 4.99% since December 2023.
Volkswagen states that it acquired around 4.99% of XPENG's total issued and outstanding share capital in December 2023, under a framework agreement the two announced in July 2023. The purchase price is not given in the Volkswagen release checked here; contemporaneous reporting put it at about US$700 million, which this record does not confirm from a primary document. The stake sits alongside a platform and software collaboration: two mid-size Volkswagen-brand electric models for China, starting with an SUV, due on the road in 2026, plus a joint sourcing programme. In February 2026 Volkswagen became the first outside customer for XPeng's VLA 2.0 driver-assistance software. It is a minority stake and a partnership, not a joint-venture company.

Xpeng: questions people ask
- Is Xpeng Chinese?
- Yes. XPeng Inc. is headquartered in Guangzhou, builds its cars at Zhaoqing and Guangzhou in Guangdong province, and was founded in China in 2014. Its shares are listed in New York and Hong Kong, and some cars for Europe are assembled under contract in Austria.
- What does Xpeng mean?
- It is the founder's name. The Chinese marque 小鹏 (Xiǎopéng) is He Xiaopeng's given name — 小 'little' and 鹏 Péng, the giant mythical bird of the Zhuangzi. The export spelling compresses it to Xpeng.
- Who owns Xpeng?
- It is a listed company with no controlling shareholder. He Xiaopeng is chairman and chief executive. Volkswagen has held about 4.99% since December 2023, and Alibaba, the largest outside holder at 13.3% when the company listed in 2020, had cut its stake to 4.94% by March 2024.
- Is Xpeng sold in the United States?
- No. Xpeng's shares trade in New York but it has never sold a car there. It sells in China and in about 60 overseas countries and regions, mostly in Europe, Southeast Asia, Australia and, since 2026, Latin America and the Gulf.
- How do you pronounce Xpeng?
- As two parts, 'X-peng', with the p sounded — roughly ex-PUNG in English. In Chinese the name is 小鹏 (Xiǎopéng), said SHYAOW-pung, because Mandarin x is a soft 'sh' made near the front teeth.
