Bayerische Motoren Werke AG: what it holds, with stakes and dates
Facts checked Chinese holding 0%
BMW is German. Bayerische Motoren Werke AG is controlled by the Quandt family -- Stefan Quandt 27.7% and Susanne Klatten 22.5% -- and no Chinese entity holds a stake. BMW does build in China through BMW Brilliance, of which it has held 75% since February 2022, and one model came the other way: the first-generation iX3 was built only at Shenyang, from September 2020 to 2024, and sold in Europe. Its successor is built at Debrecen in Hungary.

Other recorded holdings in Bayerische Motoren Werke AG
Holdings that are not control, kept out of the chain above so that nothing on this page reads as ownership when it is not. A joint venture is a company two parents built together: its percentage is a share of the venture, not a holding in the partner. The same pair can appear twice with different kinds, and both rows are real.
| Holder | What it is | Share | Since | What the source says |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Great Wall Motor | runs a joint venture with | not published | 29 November 2019 | Spotlight Automotive Ltd. (光束汽车) is owned 50/50 by Great Wall Motor and the BMW Group; the stake field is null because neither partner owns any part of the other. The agreement was signed in 2018, the company was inaugurated at Zhangjiagang, Jiangsu on 29 November 2019, the partners put in about EUR 650m between them and the plant is rated at 160,000 vehicles a year. It builds the electric MINI Cooper and Aceman. Checked on 4 September 2026: the joint venture's own site still describes the split as 50/50 and a Gasgoo report of a BMW delegation visit dated 4 April 2026 calls it a 50-50 joint venture. No filing or announcement showing BMW taking over Great Wall's half was found. |
