MG MG5: range, price, specs and where it is sold

Facts checked

The MG5 badge covers two different cars, which is the main thing to know about it. In China, Thailand, Australia and much of South-East Asia and Latin America the MG5 is a petrol four-door saloon — the second-generation AP32, launched in China in 2020, 4,675 mm long on a 2,680 mm wheelbase, with 1.5-litre naturally aspirated and turbocharged engines; MG Australia quotes 119 kW for the 1.5 turbo with a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox. Several markets sell that saloon as the MG GT.

In Europe and Britain the MG5 was instead a battery-electric estate, the MG5 EV or MG5 SW EV, derived from the Roewe Ei5 and built at Zhengzhou. It went on sale in Britain in September 2020 and was marketed there as an electric estate car. Battery packs were 50.3 kWh net and 61.1 kWh gross, rated 320 km and 400 km WLTP, with a 135 kW motor on the 2021 facelift. Thailand sells that same estate as the MG EP and, since 2023, the MG ES. The estate is no longer listed in MG's European range.

The saloon is built at SAIC's Pukou plant in Nanjing and at Laem Chabang in Thailand. Thailand took the saloon in July 2021, the Middle East in October 2021, Mexico, Indonesia and Vietnam in 2022, the Philippines in 2023, Australia in June 2023 and Malaysia in October 2024.

MG MG5: questions people ask

Is the MG5 a saloon or an estate?
Both, depending on the market. The MG5 sold in China, Thailand and Australia is a petrol four-door saloon. The MG5 EV sold in Britain and Europe was a battery-electric estate built on a different car, the Roewe Ei5.
Where is the MG5 built?
The saloon is built at SAIC's Pukou plant in Nanjing and at Laem Chabang in Thailand. The electric estate was built at Zhengzhou in Henan.
What is the MG5 called in China?
MG5, written 名爵5 (Míngjué 5, 'MING-jweh woo'). 名爵 is MG's Chinese brand name.
Can you still buy an MG5 EV in Britain?
Not new. The electric estate was sold from September 2020 but is no longer part of MG's European range; MG's small electric offering there is now the MG4.
