The MG4 is MG's electric C-segment hatchback and the model that carried the brand's electric sales in Britain and Australia. The first car, launched in China in June 2022 as the MG Mulan and in Europe the following month, was rear-wheel drive on SAIC's Modular Scalable Platform, with packs from 51 kWh to a 77 kWh Extended Range and a twin-motor XPOWER version making 320 kW. Euro NCAP gave that car five stars in 2022.
A redesigned second-generation MG4 went on sale in China on 29 August 2025 at the Chengdu show. It is front-wheel drive on SAIC's E3 architecture, 4,395 mm long on a 2,750 mm wheelbase, with a single 120 kW motor and lithium iron phosphate packs of 42.8 kWh (437 km CLTC) or 53.9 kWh (530 km CLTC). Prices opened at CNY 68,800. An 'Anxin' version using a semi-solid-state cell from Qingtao Energy, quoted at 180 Wh/kg and 537 km CLTC, was priced at CNY 102,800. Export markets sell that redesigned car as the MG4 EV Urban, with 43 kWh and 54 kWh packs, 110 kW or 118 kW, and 316 km or 405 km WLTP; Euro NCAP tested it in 2025 and again published five stars.
Production is spread across SAIC's Ningde plant in Fujian and Nanjing in China, Laem Chabang in Thailand from 2023, Cikarang in Indonesia from 2024 and Taoyuan in Taiwan from 2024. The two generations are sold side by side in Australia and Ireland, where the rear-drive 64 kWh and XPOWER cars sit above the Urban.
