Dayun Group: the group, its brands and who controls it

Facts checked

Dayun traces itself to a motorcycle shop that Yuan Qinshan opened on Jiefang North Road in Yuncheng, Shanxi in September 1987. The business grew into motorcycle manufacturing, then engines, then trucks; the present holding company was formed in 2009. It is privately held and unlisted.

Most of what Dayun builds is commercial. Dayun Motor makes heavy trucks at Yuncheng, a separate light-truck operation has been based in Chengdu since 2009, and the motorcycle side sells under both Dayun and Dayang. Motorcycles and three-wheelers remain a substantial part of the business, which is unusual among Chinese groups that also tried to build passenger cars.

The passenger-car attempt was Yuanhang (远航), shown at the Chengdu auto show in 2022 and put into production in November 2023: two large saloons, the Y6 and Y7, and two SUVs, the H8 and H9. Reports of delayed salaries, store closures and staff departures at the car arm began in October 2024. In November 2024 Dayun said Yuanhang had liquidity problems and was being reorganised, and that the group's other divisions were unaffected.
