DFSK began on 27 June 2003 as Dongfeng Sokon Automobile, a 50/50 venture between Dongfeng and the Chongqing group that is now Seres. It built microvans and small commercial vehicles — the C, K, V and E series — starting with the C-series in 2005, using Suzuki engines. For years it was the most profitable part of the Sokon group.
A second line followed: Dongfeng Fengguang (东风风光), sold abroad as Fengon or DFSK Glory, covering budget SUVs and people-carriers such as the 580, 500, ix5 and the 330 and 380 MPVs. Plants are at Shiyan in Hubei and in Chongqing.
Sokon bought Dongfeng out in stages — an attempt in 2018-2019 failed, a purchase of the remaining half followed in September 2019, and full ownership was in place by April 2020. In October 2023 the manufacturing company was renamed Seres Auto (Hubei), although the DFSK and Fengon badges stayed on the vehicles.
DFSK is the group's export workhorse and is often the Chinese brand people encounter first in Latin America, Southeast Asia and parts of Eastern Europe. Overseas assembly has run in Indonesia since 2015 and in Pakistan since 2017, with operations in Thailand as well. The market list here covers only the countries with a documented plant; the sales footprint is wider.

Founder and chairman Zhang Xinghai and his family control Seres through Chongqing Sokon Holding. The precise family shareholding was not verified.

Chongqing Sokon Holding, the Zhang family's vehicle, is the controlling shareholder of Seres Group. Wikipedia lists the stake at 26.53% without a date; it was not checked against a filing, so no figure is recorded here.
