Baojun: owner, models, markets and what the name means

Facts checked United States status as of 4 September 2026

Baojun was launched by SAIC-GM-Wuling on 18 July 2010 to sell passenger cars a step above the Wuling minivans but below Chevrolet and Buick. Its early cars, starting with the Baojun 630 saloon, used simplified versions of General Motors platforms.

The brand's biggest success was the Baojun 510, a small SUV that recorded 416,883 sales in its first full year. From 2019 the company repositioned the marque as 'New Baojun', with a new badge, sharper styling and a naming scheme of RC for saloons, RS for SUVs and RM for MPVs.

Since 2023 Baojun has moved almost entirely to electrified models — the Yep, the Yunduo, the plug-in hybrid Yunhai and the Xiangjing saloon — leaving the KiWi EV as the smallest car in the range. The brand sells in China; some earlier Baojun models were exported wearing Chevrolet badges or sold by sister companies in India and Indonesia.

Owned by SAIC-GM-Wuling (SAIC Motor 50.1%, GM China 44%, Guangxi Automobile Group 5.9%), which launched the brand on 18 July 2010.
