The LEVC TX is the current London black cab, and the second of the two Chinese-owned, British-built cars in this group. It is made at LEVC's plant at Ansty Park near Coventry, which opened on 22 March 2017 with Geely chairman Li Shufu cutting the ribbon and which LEVC describes as the first car plant in the United Kingdom dedicated solely to electric-vehicle production. LEVC says the site has helped create more than 1,000 jobs, including 200 engineers and 30 apprenticeships, and that the line can switch between taxis and vans. More than 10,000 TX taxis had been built by March 2023.
The TX is a range-extended electric vehicle: an electric motor of 110 kW peak drives the rear wheels, and a small petrol engine acts only as a generator. LEVC quotes 26.5 kWh of usable battery energy (Wikipedia records a 31 kWh gross pack supplied by LG Chem), 68 miles (about 109 km) on electricity alone and up to 333 miles (about 536 km) in total between charges; LEVC does not state which test cycle those figures use, so they are recorded here as manufacturer figures. Wikipedia identifies the range extender as a 1.5-litre three-cylinder unit of Volvo origin.
LEVC belongs to Geely, which bought the assets of the collapsed Manganese Bronze taxi business and rebuilt it around the Ansty plant. LEVC sells the TX across Europe - its own site lists market pages for Germany, Spain, the Netherlands, France, Sweden, Poland, Hungary, Greece, Austria, Belgium, Malta, Egypt and Israel - and Wikipedia records TX taxis operating in Australia, Japan, China and elsewhere. LEVC does not publish list prices on its public site.
