Rising Auto: owner, models, markets and what the name means

Facts checked United States status as of 4 September 2026

Rising Auto began on 10 May 2020 as the R brand, an electric line within Roewe, and was spun out as a separate company in November 2021 under the Chinese name 飞凡 (Fēifán). It was SAIC's second attempt at a premium electric marque, positioned below IM Motors.

Its cars were the ER6 saloon and Marvel R crossover inherited from the Roewe R line, then the R7 coupe-SUV in 2022 and the F7 saloon in 2023. The R7 and F7 were offered with battery swapping, an approach SAIC pursued with the state grid and a swap-station operator.

Sales never reached the volumes SAIC needed. Reports that the group was giving up on the brand appeared in March 2024, and in the autumn of that year SAIC ended Rising Auto's independent operation and folded it back into Roewe as a high-end product line. Reporting differs on whether the change took effect in October or November 2024.

Wholly owned by SAIC Motor. Now a product line inside Roewe rather than a separate brand.

No longer an independent brand. Rising Auto stopped operating separately in autumn 2024 and became a premium electric product line inside Roewe. Cars already sold continue to be supported; no new Rising-badged models have been announced.

Who owns Rising Auto?

  1. Shanghai Municipal State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission controls SAIC Motor since 1995.

The Shanghai municipal state-assets commission is SAIC Motor's ultimate controller, holding its shares through the wholly state-owned parent Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation (Group). Published figures for the parent's holding in the listed company cluster between about 63% and 68%; no figure carrying its own date could be confirmed from an SAIC filing, so the stake is left null.

  2. SAIC Motor owns Rising Auto at 100% since 10 May 2020.

Created as the Roewe R brand on 10 May 2020, spun out as Rising Auto in November 2021 and folded back into Roewe in the autumn of 2024. SAIC owned it throughout.
