Haima is the car brand of Hainan, China's island province. It started in 1992 as a venture between the Hainan provincial government and Mazda, assembling Mazda models on the island. FAW bought Mazda's share in 2006 and Haima carried on building cars based on Mazda platforms — the first Haima-badged car, the Haima Family of 2003, was a rebodied eighth-generation Mazda 323 — but without the Mazda name.

Volumes peaked in the early 2010s at around 230,000 cars a year and have been far smaller since; 157,242 passenger cars were sold in 2013. The current range is short: the 8S crossover and the 7X people-carrier, the latter also offered as the battery-electric 7X-E.

Hainan has set out to stop selling fuel-only cars, and Haima has run a hydrogen fuel-cell programme aimed at that. Ownership is layered: the Shenzhen-listed parent is controlled by private Haima-named investment vehicles, while Hainan provincial state capital holds 49% of the FAW Haima manufacturing subsidiary, transferred from FAW at no charge in July 2021.

Who owns Haima?

  1. Haima Investment Group Co., Ltd. controls Haima Automobile.

Privately held Haima-named investment vehicles, associated with the company's chairman, are the largest shareholder group in the Shenzhen-listed Haima Automobile. Public data services list two such holders at roughly 28.8% and 5.66%, but the figures are undated and were not checked against a filing. Note that Wikipedia states the Hainan provincial government holds 51%; that appears to describe a subsidiary rather than the listed company and could not be reconciled.

  2. Haima Automobile owns Haima at 100% since 1992.

The Haima marque belongs to Haima Automobile Co., Ltd. of Haikou, Hainan.
