The smart #1 is the first car of the reinvented smart brand, which is a 50:50 international joint venture between Mercedes-Benz AG and Geely Holding Group. Mercedes-Benz does the design; Geely does the engineering and the manufacturing. The car is built at Xi'an in Shaanxi province, China, from 2022, on Geely's SEA electric platform - the same family of architecture as the Volvo EX30 and the Zeekr X.
It is a compact electric SUV, 4,270 mm long, with a 66 kWh gross battery quoted by smart UK. WLTP ranges run from 193 miles (311 km) for the Pure and Pro to 273 miles (439 km) for the Premium; the BRABUS all-wheel-drive version makes 315 kW. The United Kingdom starting price is GBP 29,960.
Euro NCAP awarded the #1 five stars in 2022 with 96 per cent for adult occupant protection, and ANCAP published a matching five-star result. European sales and marketing are handled by smart Europe GmbH, based at Leinfelden-Echterdingen near Stuttgart and a wholly owned subsidiary of smart mobility International Pte. Ltd. The car is not sold in the United States: smart left that market in 2019 and the Geely-built generation has never been offered there.
