Proton X50

Proton X50: range, price, specs and where it is sold

Facts checked

The Proton X50 is the clearest illustration of what Geely's stake in Proton bought Malaysia: a Geely model, re-engineered and re-badged, and assembled locally. It is a rebadged Geely Binyue (缤越, Bīnyuè, sold in some export markets as the Geely Coolray) on the BMA architecture that Geely developed with Volvo input.

It is not imported from China. Assembly takes place at Proton's own plant in Proton City, Tanjung Malim, Perak, Malaysia; the first unit came off the line on 15 September 2020 with 40 per cent local content, and the car was launched on 27 October 2020 at prices from MYR 79,200 to MYR 103,300. Early cars used 1.5-litre three-cylinder turbo engines of 150 PS or 177 PS depending on injection system. A 2025 update, marketed as the All-New X50, introduced a 1.5-litre four-cylinder turbo rated by Proton at 181 PS (about 133 kW) and 290 Nm with a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox, and the starting price on Proton's site is MYR 89,800.

ASEAN NCAP awarded the 2020 X50 Standard five stars under its 2017-2020 protocol, with 43.64 points for adult occupant protection, 21.17 for child occupant protection and 19.44 for safety assist, a total of 84.25. Proton itself is a Malaysian company controlled by the conglomerate DRB-HICOM; Geely Holding took a minority shareholding in 2017, which is what opened Proton's access to Geely platforms.
