Shanghai built its first Model 3 in December 2019 and delivered to customers from 7 January 2020. It is Tesla's export plant for regions without a local gigafactory, with Europe the main destination and right-hand-drive cars going to Australia and New Zealand. A Tesla is not a Chinese car by ownership -- Tesla is an American company -- but a large share of the Model 3s sold outside North America are built in China.
